Questions
- What can be tagged? People, photos, videos, music, websites, blogs, articles, forum topics, groups, events, announcements, advertisements, etc.
- How will this help people? Allows people to search by topic rather than by media.
- How do we maintain authority? Being the central repository of tags, but that also means making these list of tags available for other websites to utilize.
Protocols and API
- OPML is used to exchange lists.
- RSS and ATOM are used to exchange articles.
- FOAF is used to exchange information about a person.
- XFN describes relationships between people using
<a> links.
- RELATIONSHIP describes relationships between people using XML.
- DOAC is a protocol for exchanging career information.
- XML-RPC is used for applications to exchange server processes with each other.
- JSON is a Javascript data structure exchange format.
- BIO 0.1 is a vocabulary spec to describe biographical information.
- Google Maps and Yahoo! Maps offers an API to utilize their mapping features for mashups.
- KML is used to define points and geometries on a map.
- YADIS is a service discovery protocol, i.e. given a URL, it will determine what service is appropriate for data exchange between the user site and the consumer website.
Issues
- Redundancy: Tagalag tags people. del.icio.us tags websites. But some websites are blogs that are published by a single person. So that means I have to use the same tags for the person, and her/his blog.
- Existing Services: Not everyone will migrate to a new system. We must provide a service that will work in conjunction with existing services.
Research
Ideas
- Start off with the profile that has common fields found in Xanga, Myspace, etc. and have it publishable in FOAF/BIO format.
- Have controlled vocabulary like in Drupal's taxonomy module.
- Abstract the content type like in Drupal so that taxonomy can be applied to any content type (e.g. events, people, articles, projects, etc.). Content type may be multiplied by company (e.g. blog: Xanga, Livejournal, etc.).
- Allow content providers and designers the ability to sell their products (e.g. music, templates, videos, etc.).
- Keywords highlighted in blogs similar to wikis.
- Photos -> Sets -> Group Pools = News Articles/Blog Entries -> Categories -> Zines
